Notes: Director: Michael Mindlin ; Credited as being the "first-ever American anti-Nazi film." A documentary that is based of footage shot by a crew led by the newspaper publisher and journalist Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr. He went on a fact finding mission to various European capitals in 1933, and was well aware as early as that of the so-called "Jewish problem" that pre-occupied Hitler. Because the Production Code and the Neutrality Act were not yet in place at the time this film manages to be screened in New York, but not before the New York State Censor Board refused the film a license. It played for only two weeks in New York City theatres which were filled to capacity. This documentary is rarely shown and I have never seen any poster of any kind from this movie. The only advertisement I could find that promotes the screening of this film, is this newspaper ad placed by the Mayfair Theatre in THE NEW YORK TIMES on APRIL 30 1934, which happens to be in fact, the first day of this films release!! |
