Notes: Director: Marc Levin; The story takes place in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights. This neighborhood in noted for the presence of two large ethnic communities, the Black West Indian Rastafarians, and the Jewish Chabad community. Those communities have known their share of friction and tension between them, which came to a boiling point with the Crown Heights Riots a decade earlier. Just like in that case, this story too begins with a minor car crash that is taken by hot heads on both sides to ridiculous levels. Amid this racial explosion, a young Rastafarian hip-hop musician, and a young Jewish woman from a religious family find love, and seemingly at first sight. Their relationship is obviously reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, or more recently the one in West Side Story. Some go as far as saying that the story is influenced by the Song of Songs, one of the five “megillot” (scrolls) in the Tanakh, the Jewish bible. Jewish tradition attributes this book to King Solomon, Sol also being the rapper’s name. And, if we mention King Solomon, can the story Solomon and Sheba be far behind? (only in reverse).
