Notes: Director: Konrad Wolf; An East German remake of the 1938 Soviet film. The director is the son of Friedrick Wolf who wrote the 1933 play on which this movie is based. This remake follows the story a little more faithfully, Professor Mamlock, for example, is not shot by the SA, but rather commits suicide after realizing the error of his ways, of not taking a stand against the Nazis when such action was needed. In so many words, it’s alluded that the poor doctor has brought his fate upon himself. Very cruel conclusion, I think. It is about Professor Mamlock, a respected Jewish surgeon living in the Weimar Republic, pre-Nazi Germany. As the Nazis come to power in the early 30’s, life for Jews became more and more difficult. Throughout this time, Professor Mamlock tries to ignore the growing unrest, remains a-political, and avoids dealing with the rampant Anti-Semitism all around, concentrating instead on his work as a doctor. In fact, when he learns that his son Rolf, tries to do something about the current situation and joins the Communist Party, the Professor kick him out of the house. His posturing did not help him. One day the SA yanked him out of his hospital, painted large JUDE on his doctor’s robe and paraded him around the city. Forbidden to work as a doctor, broke and humiliated, he realizes the error of his way of not fighting back when it was called for.
