| Notes: Director: Christopher Nolan; J. Robert Oppenheimer was a brilliant American theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear bomb. He was director of the Manhattan Project in the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico during World War II. This biographical film ambitiously covers landmarks events in the life of Oppenheimer spanning the years 1926 to 1963. It received critical acclaim and featured stellar performances from an ensemble cast. It was also praised for its historical accuracy. Oppenheimer was confident the Americans will be the first to build the nuclear bomb even though the Nazi’s had a head start. He suggested that their rampant Antisemitism would be their downfall. The rational being that the brain drain that resulted from leading Jewish scientists fleeing Europe from Nazis, has benefitted America. Many of them were recruited to be on the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer is often referred to as a German Jew although he pointed out that he was not German (he was born in New York City), neither was he a practicing Jew. |
